Van Cliburn Competition: Celebrating The Winner and Remembering Van

van cliburn winner

Be in awe.

I am compelled to share this amazing video analysis of the winning performance of the recent Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Be in awe of the winner Yunchan Lim from South Korea, at 18, the youngest to win the competition in its 60 year history. Watch it below and experience the reaction of two of the competition’s jury members.

Remembering Van

Cliburn’s Win in Moscow

Cliburn won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958. An American winning in Moscow during the height of the Cold War. He played Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto # 3 to win as Yunchan just did. Cliburn became a bridge between Khrushchev and Eisenhower at the time and then later played for Gorbachev and Reagan to relieve tensions at their summit.

Meeting Van

Several years ago, while producing a music performance at The White House, I was pleasantly surprised that Van Cliburn was a guest and I was able to meet and enjoy a drink with him.

Cliburn remains the only musician to receive a ticker-tape parade in NYC. (I of course asked him about it.)

After the ticker tape parade, Cliburn arrived at City Hall and when Mayor Robert Wagner asked him to speak, he said:

The thing that thrills me the most is that you are honoring classical music.

Because I am only a witness and a messenger.
I am only one of many that believe in the beauty of music.
“

For a Merger Celebration | “It Takes Two”

I booked a surprise performance of Rob Base to sing his 1988 hip-hop classic song “It Takes Two” in St. Louis to celebrate the merger of two marketing firms. We love song tie-ins. Epecially when the guests are surprised when the original artist suddenly appears to drive the event theme and corporate message. My company,…

    Farewell Stephen

11/26/21 – I heard a lecture on YouTube today that suggested that “art’s value is not in the item, it’s in what we assign to it.” – It wasn’t even in the context of discussing Non Fungible Tokens of bored apes, but that would certainly apply.  So, I searched to find the quote by Sondheim,…

Your Fanbase is Mimetic (and So Should Be Your Music Marketing)

Music fans are always making choices. What should I listen to? What genre of music, artist or song? Am I a fan of EDM, Pop, Hip-Hop or Indie Rock? Still, questions on a deeper level, what makes me choose to be a fan of a particular artist? How do I discover a new artist and…

Rock and The Corporate Message – “Light My Fire”

In 1968, screams could be heard in a recording studio in Los Angeles by The Doors lead singer Jim Morrison, but the screaming was not part of a song. Quotable Toscanini

I don’t talk about it much, but I am a committed student and devotee of Auturo Toscanini. I don’t talk about it because people have preconceived opinions about him, the ego, the temper tantrums at his orchestra, the extra-marital affairs. However, everything in its own time.  I look at his results. The performances, the books…
