Music Geography Quest

Some people travel to eat a meal in every state. Some look to consume a state specific signature dish. A Philly Cheesesteak, a Maine Lobster, a Luau in Maui. I’ll save my travel eating for Italy and create my own Music Geography Quest.

How do you list every major genre of music in the US and tie it to its city of origin, state or venue? It’s a process that may begin with this list or with the map above or this list of songs about every state.

Listening to America

Visit a site to commemorate its contribution to the genre by listening to a live performance at each location. Extra points if it’s an iconic setting, performance or venue.

I should include listening to Dixieland on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and consider Memphis vs. Chicago Blues as the list grows. EDM in Las Vegas, Grunge in Seattle, Surf Music… it’s starting to take shape now.

My Music Geography Quest

From Alternative Rock to Zydeco, here is my Music Geography Quest. Of course yours may differ and it should. But this is certainly a good start. A great quest never really ends. I know I’ll be adding to this list frequently. Bold is completed.

Prince’s Iconic Guitar Solo

I was lucky enough to be in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria for the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. During the George Harrison tribute Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Dahni Harrison (George’s son pictured with Prince below) each had their turn on guitar playing “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” but the world spun a little faster when Prince played his iconic solo.

For a Merger Celebration | “It Takes Two”

I booked a surprise performance of Rob Base to sing his 1988 hip-hop classic song “It Takes Two” in St. Louis to celebrate the merger of two marketing firms. We love song tie-ins. Epecially when the guests are surprised when the original artist suddenly appears to drive the event theme and corporate message. My company,…

    Farewell Stephen

11/26/21 – I heard a lecture on YouTube today that suggested that “art’s value is not in the item, it’s in what we assign to it.” – It wasn’t even in the context of discussing Non Fungible Tokens of bored apes, but that would certainly apply.  So, I searched to find the quote by Sondheim,…

Your Fanbase is Mimetic (and So Should Be Your Music Marketing)

Music fans are always making choices. What should I listen to? What genre of music, artist or song? Am I a fan of EDM, Pop, Hip-Hop or Indie Rock? Still, questions on a deeper level, what makes me choose to be a fan of a particular artist? How do I discover a new artist and…

Rock and The Corporate Message – “Light My Fire”

In 1968, screams could be heard in a recording studio in Los Angeles by The Doors lead singer Jim Morrison, but the screaming was not part of a song. Morrison had just learned that his other band members were about to let Buick use the band’s hit song “Light My Fire” in a television commercial…

    Quotable Toscanini

I don’t talk about it much, but I am a committed student and devotee of Auturo Toscanini. I don’t talk about it because people have preconceived opinions about him, the ego, the temper tantrums at his orchestra, the extra-marital affairs. However, everything in its own time.  I look at his results. The performances, the books…
